Song of Myself

“I celebrate myself, and sing myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.”

Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself (1855)

Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself has redefined traditional norms of poetry. Celebrating all forms of creation, from America to Self to Nature, Whitman has proven to be a pioneer in American poetry. Our group aims to critically examine the concept of Self in Song of Myself and incorporate an Islamic perspective to the work.
